Remember to get those A1s updated

If your employees are the types, who frequently see the inside of an airport, it is time to consider renewing their A1 certificates.

An A1 certificate is the documentation for the ruling on social security within the European Union (and the European Economic Area). When an employee performs work in multiple jurisdictions within the EU/EEA only one state offers the coverage of social security. The state of coverage is also the state in which the employer should make contributions. The A1 certifies which state this is.

If your staff travels between states to perform services, you generally need an A1 covering this activity – these are normally valid for a period of one year. They do not expire by the end of the year but rather by the end of the period in which they are sought. The turn of a new year is however a good time to prepare for the renewals that will be in store for the year and also re-visit the terms under which the A1s were given as we are seeing more and more cross-border activity due to Corona restrictions being lifted.

The consequences of having no or an invalid A1 while working in another state can be quite significant ranging from warnings to hefty fines and restrictions on entry for both employees and the employer.
